The government has launched a levelling up advertisment on social media, including Facebook, and one of these adverts targets Gainsborough.

The advert on Facebook starts with: “The UK Government is working with West Lindsey District Council to bring more action and more adventure.” It then adds a photo with a copy saying: “Funded by the UK government”, “10 million to level up in Gainsborough, creating a new cinema, shops and green spaces”.

The government levelling up website for Gainsborough wrote: Gainsborough’s £10 million Levelling up boost will create a town centre to be proud of. There’ll be a new four-screen multiplex cinema, creating jobs and bringing more visitors to the town centre.

As well as the cinema, the funding will support the redesign of Whitton Gardens with new trees and flowers, plus a new park for everyone to enjoy at the Baltic Mill. And there’s money for the much-loved marketplace, with more cafes and restaurants, and a revamped space for the traditional twice-weekly street market.

The old Town Hall will be redeveloped as a new shared space for local businesses, and the historic shop fronts and buildings along Market Street, Lord Street and Silver Street will also be refurbished to make the town centre an even more attractive place to visit, shop and meet up.

The Levelling Up cash will also fund dozens of new homes in the town centre, making full use of empty shops and unused commercial spaces. It’s a win-win for high street businesses, for local builders and for local people taking their first step on to the property ladder.

The Levelling Up funds will also help transform empty shops and unused commercial spaces into new homes, bringing vibrancy, and new residents, into the heart of the town centre.

A facebook user called John commented: “Upgrading the hospital and GP services in the town plus a more visible police presence would be a better investment.”

Bill commented: “Had cinema’s before… failed
Had shops … they leave.
Would be better spent on infastructure as house builds are increasing everywhere.
Better road system… getting through town is a nightmare. Better hospital instead of taking us of to lincoln or scunthorpe of which struggle because thier own areas are expanding.
Good starting points i think.”

And Gabrielle said: “Could market rasen please have a pool. Always second to Gainsborough.”
