Edward Leigh reselected conservative parliamentary candidate for Gainsborough

On 20th January 2023, Edward Leigh, the current MP for the Gainsborough constituency, was reselected by his local party association as the conservative candidate for the Gainsborough Constituency.

Edward Leigh posted on his Facebook page:
Tonight I have been given the honour and privilege of being selected as the conservative candidate for the Gainsborough constituency. In the forthcoming general election.
Thank you to the Gainsborough Constituency Conservative Association for their continued support.

Leigh has represented Gainsborough, Lincolnshire in the House of Commons since 1983 (representing its predecessor constituency, Gainsborough and Horncastle, until 1997).

Leigh served as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in John Major’s ministry but was sacked in May 1993 over the stance he took by opposing the Maastricht Treaty. Whilst in office at the DTI he was a keen advocate of privatisation of the Post Office.

Leigh believes in repealing the Human Rights Act, to get out of the European Refugee Convention and repeal the Modern Slavery Act so that people can be detained and deported.

More recently, Edward Leigh’s electoral agent made the national news with Gilles McNeill, also former leader of West Lindsey Council, after McNeill cheated his local Conservative Party association out of more than £30,000.
